The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is a standardized examination used for admission to New York City’s specialized high schools. The test consists of two main sections: English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, each containing 57 questions. However, only 47 questions per section count toward your final score, as 10 questions in each section are field questions used for research purposes.
SHSAT scoring involves converting raw scores (number of correct answers) into scaled scores ranging from 200-400 per section. Your total SHSAT score is the sum of both scaled scores, with a maximum possible score of 800. The scaling process accounts for test difficulty variations across different administrations, ensuring fair comparison among all test-takers.
Each specialized high school has different cutoff scores that vary annually based on applicant performance. Top-tier schools like Stuyvesant typically require scores above 560, while other schools may accept scores in the 490-520 range. Understanding your estimated score helps you gauge your competitiveness and plan your preparation strategy effectively.
