What is the Navy ASVAB?

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a standardized test used to determine eligibility and qualifications for enlistment in the U.S. military, including the Navy. It evaluates a candidate’s knowledge and skills across multiple areas.

The most critical part of the ASVAB for enlistment is the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT), which is calculated using scores from four key subtests:

  • Arithmetic Reasoning (AR): Measures ability to solve arithmetic word problems.
  • Mathematics Knowledge (MK): Tests knowledge of high school-level math concepts.
  • Word Knowledge (WK): Assesses understanding of word meanings.
  • Paragraph Comprehension (PC): Tests ability to understand written information.

The formula for calculating the AFQT score is:

AFQT = (2 × VE) + AR + MK

Here, Verbal Expression (VE) is calculated as:

VE = WK + PC

Your AFQT score determines overall eligibility for enlistment in the Navy. A minimum score of 31 is required for most applicants.
