eBay Australia Fee Structure (2026)

eBay charges sellers a Final Value Fee (FVF) on the total sale amount — that is the item price plus any shipping you charge the buyer. Fees are tiered based on sale amount and differ by item category and store subscription level. There is also a fixed AU$0.30 per-order fee added to every transaction.

No Store Sellers

If you sell without an eBay store, eBay applies a flat rate with a cap of AU$440 per item. All fees for individual sellers already include GST.

Store Subscription Sellers

Store subscribers receive lower FVF rates. A 10% GST surcharge is added on top of eBay’s listed store fees if you have not provided your ABN to eBay. The FVF cap for store sellers is AU$400 per item.

How to Calculate eBay AU Fees Step by Step

Knowing exactly how the fee is assembled helps you set your listing price with confidence. Here is the order of operations eBay uses.

  1. Work out the total sale amount: Add your item price and the shipping amount you charged the buyer. GST paid by the buyer on the item is excluded from the FVF base.
  2. Apply the correct FVF rate: Use your store tier and item category to find your rate. For no-store sellers on most categories, the rate is 13.4% on the first AU$4,000 and 2.5% on any amount above that.
  3. Add the AU$0.30 per-order fee: This is charged flat on every completed transaction regardless of sale price.
  4. Add any Promoted Listings fee: If you used Promoted Listings Standard, multiply the total sale amount by your chosen ad rate. This fee only applies when a buyer clicks your promoted ad and purchases.
  5. Check the FVF cap: If the FVF calculated exceeds AU$440 (no store) or AU$400 (store sellers), eBay will cap it at that amount.
  6. Check GST on fees: If you have a store subscription but have not given eBay your ABN, add 10% GST on top of all fees. Individual seller fees already include GST.
  7. Add the international fee (if applicable): For items shipped outside Australia, add 1.1% (no store) or 1.0% (store) to the total sale amount.
  8. Subtract all fees plus your item cost and actual shipping cost from your sale revenue to arrive at your net profit.

Worked Example — No Store, General Category

You sell a kitchen gadget for AU$120 with AU$10 shipping charged to buyer. Your item cost AU$45 and you spend AU$8 on postage.

GST on eBay Fees — What You Need to Know

GST treatment varies depending on whether you hold an ABN and whether you have a store subscription. Getting this wrong means either over-paying or incorrectly accounting for your tax obligations.

Seller TypeABN Provided?GST on eBay Fees
No Store (Individual)Yes or NoAlready included in quoted rates
Basic / Featured / Anchor StoreYesNo additional GST — rates are as listed
Basic / Featured / Anchor StoreNo10% GST added on top of the listed fee rates

If you are GST-registered for your own business, the GST you pay on eBay fees is a creditable acquisition — meaning you can claim it back as an input tax credit in your BAS lodgement. Keep records of all eBay fee invoices.

Separately, if you sell goods that are subject to GST, you must include GST in your listing price. eBay does not collect GST on your behalf for domestic sales — that is your responsibility once you are registered.

Pricing Strategy to Cover Fees

Many sellers price items without accounting for fees and end up with far less profit than expected. These practical tips help you build fees into your pricing from the start.

Reverse-price your listingsStart with your desired net profit, add your cost of goods, your postage cost, and then gross up for the FVF rate. For a 13.4% FVF, divide your target revenue by 0.866 to get the listing price you need.
Account for shipping separatelyeBay calculates FVF on shipping charged — so free postage only avoids the fee if you truly absorb the cost. Consider building a flat shipping amount that covers your postage expenses.
Run break-even analysis on store plansUpgrade to a Basic Store only when the fee savings exceed the monthly subscription. For general category items at 13.4% vs 10.4%, the saving is 3% per sale — meaning AU$832 in monthly sales volume covers a AU$24.95 subscription.
Use Promoted Listings selectivelyPromoted Listings fees are only triggered on a sale — but high ad rates can eat deeply into margins. Set your ad rate at or close to the category average to stay competitive without over-spending.
Watch the $4,000 tier thresholdOn sales above AU$4,000, the portion above $4,000 is charged at only 2.5%. This makes eBay particularly competitive for higher-value items compared to flat-rate marketplaces.
Register your ABN with eBayStore subscribers without an ABN pay 10% extra GST on their fees. If you have an ABN, submit it to eBay under account settings to ensure you are charged at the correct pre-GST rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does eBay charge fees on shipping in Australia? +
Yes. eBay Australia calculates its Final Value Fee on the total sale amount, which includes the item price and any postage charged to the buyer. If you charge AU$10 for postage, eBay will take its percentage from that as well. This is why many sellers build shipping into the item price rather than listing separate postage charges — though this does not reduce the fee, only simplifies calculations.
What is the FVF cap on eBay Australia? +
eBay Australia caps the Final Value Fee at AU$440 per item for sellers without a store subscription, and AU$400 per item for store subscribers. This cap is particularly relevant for high-value items such as vehicles, electronics, or collectables. Once the calculated FVF hits the cap, no additional FVF is charged — though the AU$0.30 per-order fee and any Promoted Listings fees still apply.
How many free listings do I get each month? +
Individual (no store) sellers on eBay Australia receive 250 free listings per month. After that, an insertion fee applies per listing. eBay Store subscribers receive significantly more free listings depending on their plan — Basic Store, Featured Store, and Anchor Store each provide progressively higher limits. Note that free listings refer to the cost to list an item; Final Value Fees are still charged when the item sells.
Do I need to charge GST on my eBay sales? +
You are only required to charge and remit GST on your eBay sales if you are registered for GST with the ATO. Registration is compulsory once your annual turnover reaches or is likely to reach AU$75,000. If you are below this threshold and not voluntarily registered, you do not need to add GST to your listings. eBay’s own platform fees to you already include GST (for individual sellers) or may have GST added depending on your ABN status.
Can I claim eBay fees as a tax deduction? +
Yes. If you are selling on eBay as part of a business activity, eBay’s Final Value Fees, store subscription fees, and Promoted Listings fees are all deductible business expenses for income tax purposes. Keep all your eBay fee invoices (available in your Seller Hub). If you are GST-registered, you can also claim input tax credits for the GST component of those fees through your BAS. Casual or hobby sellers may have different tax treatment — consult a registered tax agent for your specific circumstances.
What are Promoted Listings and how are the fees calculated? +
Promoted Listings Standard is eBay’s advertising product that boosts your item’s visibility in search results. You choose an ad rate (a percentage of the final sale price), and this fee is only charged when a buyer clicks your promoted listing and purchases within 30 days. The ad rate is applied to the total sale amount (item + shipping). There is no upfront cost — you only pay on a successful sale. Rates vary by category and competition; eBay shows a suggested rate in your Seller Hub.
Is it cheaper to sell internationally from Australia on eBay? +
International sales on eBay Australia attract an additional 1.1% (no store) or 1.0% (store sellers) fee on the total sale amount. If the buyer pays in a foreign currency, a further currency conversion fee of 3.3% (no store) or 3.0% (store) applies. These extra fees can quickly erode margins on lower-value items. For higher-value items, international sales can still be worthwhile given the access to a larger buyer pool — just factor these costs into your asking price.
What happens if I do not meet eBay’s performance standards? +
If eBay determines that your seller performance is below standard, you may be subject to a 5.5% FVF surcharge on all sales in the following calendar month. This is applied in addition to your normal Final Value Fee rate. Maintaining a good seller score — by shipping promptly, describing items accurately, and resolving buyer issues quickly — avoids this penalty and keeps your fees as low as possible. eBay reviews seller performance metrics monthly.
