GWA Calculator | Compute Your Academic Average

GWA Calculator – Calculate Your General Weighted Average

GWA Calculator

What is GWA (General Weighted Average)?

GWA, or General Weighted Average, is a metric used in the Philippine education system to measure a student’s overall academic performance. It is similar to the Grade Point Average (GPA) used in other countries but with some differences in calculation and grading scale.

The GWA takes into account both the grade received in each course and the number of units (or credit hours) assigned to that course, providing a weighted average that reflects the student’s overall academic achievement.

How to Use the GWA Calculator?

1. Enter Course Information

Start by entering the details for each course you’ve taken. You’ll need to provide:
a) Course Name (optional, for your reference)
b) Number of Units (usually ranging from 1 to 5)
c) Grade Received (select from the dropdown menu)

2. Add More Courses

If you need to include more courses, click the “Add Course” button. This will create a new row where you can enter additional course information.

3. Fill in All Fields

Ensure that you’ve entered the units and selected a grade for each course. Leaving any field blank will result in an error message when you try to calculate.

4. Calculate Your GWA: Once you’ve entered all your courses, click the “Calculate GWA” button. The calculator will process your input and display the result.

5. Interpret the Results

  • Your GWA will be displayed with two decimal places. In the Philippine grading system, a lower GWA indicates better performance. Typically, a GWA of 1.00 is the highest possible score, representing excellent performance.
  • The calculator also provides a brief explanation of how the GWA was computed, showing the total grade points and total units used in the calculation.

6. Understand the Grading Scale

The calculator uses the common Philippine grading scale:

  • – Excellent
  • 1.25 to 1.50 – Very Good
  • 1.75 to 2.00 – Good
  • 2.25 to 2.50 – Satisfactory
  • 2.75 to 3.00 – Passing
  • 5.00 – Failed

7. Consider Multiple Semesters

This calculator can be used for a single semester or for your entire academic career. If calculating for multiple semesters, make sure to include all courses from all relevant semesters.

While the GWA is an important measure of academic performance, it’s not the only factor in evaluating a student’s capabilities. Many institutions and employers also consider extracurricular activities, practical skills, and personal qualities alongside academic achievements.

By using this GWA Calculator regularly, you can keep track of your academic progress, set goals for improvement, and make informed decisions about your studies.
