Cross Stitch Fabric Counts
Cross stitch fabric count refers to the number of stitches per inch or centimeter of fabric. The higher the count, the smaller the stitches and the more detailed your finished piece will be. Common fabric counts include 11, 14, 16, 18, 22, 28, and 32 count.
When working with evenweave or linen fabrics, stitchers often work “over two” threads, effectively halving the count. For example, stitching over two threads on 28-count linen gives you an effective count of 14, similar to 14-count Aida but with a different texture and appearance.
The fabric count you choose will significantly impact the final size of your project. A design stitched on 14-count fabric will be approximately 28% larger than the same design stitched on 18-count fabric. Our calculator helps you visualize these differences before you begin your project.
How to Use the Cross Stitch Calculator
Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Cross Stitch Calculator
Step 1: Enter Pattern Dimensions
Input the width and height of your cross stitch pattern in stitches. These numbers can typically be found on your pattern chart or in the pattern information. For example, if your pattern is 100 stitches wide by 150 stitches high, enter these values in the respective fields.
Step 2: Specify Fabric Details
Enter your fabric count (such as 14, 16, 18, etc.) and select whether this count is per inch or per centimeter. Then choose how many threads you’ll be stitching over. For standard Aida fabric, select “1 thread.” For evenweave or linen where you might stitch over two threads, select “2 threads.”
Step 3: Add Margins and Frame Details
Specify how much margin you want around your design. A standard recommendation is 2-3 inches on each side. If you plan to frame your work, enter the width of the frame border to calculate the final displayed size.
Step 4: Review Your Results
After clicking the calculate button, review the comprehensive results table showing your design size, fabric requirements with margins, and total size with framing. The measurements are provided in both inches and centimeters for your convenience.
Step 5: Use the Fabric Recommendation
Check the fabric recommendation section that suggests the minimum fabric size you should purchase for your project. This recommendation takes into account your pattern size, chosen fabric count, and desired margins to ensure you have enough fabric for your project.
