Cousin relationships can be confusing, but they follow a logical pattern based on shared ancestors and generational differences. A cousin is someone who shares a common ancestor that is at least two generations away, such as a grandparent or great-grandparent.

The cousin number (first, second, third, etc.) is determined by counting the number of “greats” in your shared ancestor’s title and adding one. For example, if you share great-grandparents, you are second cousins because there is one “great” plus one equals two.

The “removed” designation indicates a generational difference between cousins. If your great-grandparent is your cousin’s great-great-grandparent, you are first cousins once removed because there is a one-generation difference between your relationships to the common ancestor.
