Use the instructor’s syllabus and official gradebook. Category drops, curving, extra credit, unposted work, rounding, a separate minimum-final rule, or an exam score above 100% can change the outcome.

The weighted-grade equation

Target course grade = current grade × completed weight + final grade × final weight
Final grade needed = (target − current grade × completed weight) ÷ final weight

Convert each percentage weight to a decimal before multiplying. In the default example, current work contributes 84 × 0.75 = 63 course-grade points. The target is 85, so the final must contribute 22 more course-grade points. Because the final is worth 0.25 of the course, 22 ÷ 0.25 = 88 percent.

The result is not a forecast. It is the break-even exam score under the entered model. The calculator keeps the algebra transparent so a student can reconcile it with the syllabus instead of trusting a gradebook’s color or letter label.

Current percentage mode

Select current grade percentage when the learning-management system reports a grade for all completed work and the completed categories together account for the entered completed weight. The 84 percent default is treated as a normalized average of that 75 percent portion of the course.

Some systems display a “running total” that excludes ungraded work, while others count missing assignments as zero. Read the gradebook settings. If a project is ungraded but belongs to the completed-weight block, the displayed current percentage may not represent the same denominator assumed here.

Earned and possible points mode

In points mode, enter points earned so far in the first box and possible points so far in the second. The calculator derives current percentage as earned divided by possible. Use this only when those points collectively represent the completed-weight portion. Do not combine a points ratio with category weights that already reweight the same assignments unless the syllabus does so.

A pure total-points course can be calculated more directly by treating the completed work and final according to their actual point shares. If 750 points have been possible and the final is 250 points, those blocks are 75 and 25 percent. If extra credit sits outside the stated denominator, handle it according to the instructor’s exact rule.

Default points translation

An 88 percent target on a 200-point final is 176 points. This is the exact arithmetic threshold before any item-level constraints or grading increments. If every question is worth four points and partial credit is impossible, the attainable totals come in four-point steps; a nominal 176 may be attainable, while 177 would require rounding up to 180.

The calculator deliberately shows one decimal place for exam points but does not round the threshold into a promise. Determine the next attainable score from the exam design. If the instructor rounds only the final course grade, do not round the exam requirement prematurely.

Reachability and score caps

The highest possible final-score input allows for exams capped at 100, extra-credit exams that can exceed 100, or a lower practical cap. The best possible course grade is the current contribution plus that cap multiplied by final weight. The default best possible grade is 63 + 100 × 0.25 = 88 percent.

If the needed score exceeds the cap, the target is not reachable through the final alone under the entered assumptions. That result is not a judgment about the student. It signals that the target, gradebook inputs, or available grade components need review. Ask whether unposted work, corrections, or permitted alternatives exist; do not assume unauthorized extra credit.

Minimum-final policies

A syllabus may require a minimum exam percentage even when the weighted course average would pass. For example, a student might mathematically need 58 percent to reach the target but still need 60 percent because of a separate final-exam rule. The calculator reports the greater operative threshold through its status explanation when an entered floor exceeds the algebraic requirement.

Likewise, programs may require minimum scores in labs, clinical work, competencies, or gateway assessments. A weighted total cannot override those rules. Record each independent requirement beside the overall average.

How to use the scenario table

The table calculates course outcomes at 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 percent. Under the default, an 80 on the final produces 63 + 20 = 83 overall. A 90 produces 85.50. These are checkpoints, not grade predictions.

Use the table to set more than one plan: a minimum threshold, a realistic working target, and a stretch score. The gap column compares each outcome with the course target. Study planning should still prioritize learning objectives, retrieval practice, feedback, sleep, and time allocation rather than treating the required percentage as the only goal.

Rounding rules can change the boundary

Some instructors report decimals exactly, some round at a specified digit, and some assign letter grades from unrounded totals. An 84.995 is not automatically an 85.00. The calculator does not assume a rounding policy because that would risk declaring a target achieved when the syllabus does not.

Enter the precise target associated with the published boundary and keep source grades unrounded where possible. If individual categories are rounded before weighting, reproducing the official result may require the gradebook’s order of operations. Dropped grades, curves, and category rules

Dropping the lowest quiz changes the current category average and sometimes the possible-point denominator. A curve may add points, rescale scores, or change letter thresholds; those methods are not equivalent. Do not enter a hoped-for curve. Recalculate after the instructor publishes the rule or posts the adjusted grade.

Weighted averages follow the same general idea as the NIST weighted-mean formula: values contribute in proportion to assigned weights. But a course syllabus may use nested category weights, replacement exams, or attendance caps. Rebuild those layers before using the two-block equation.

Privacy and communication

Grades maintained by an educational institution are generally education records. This browser calculator does not need a name, student ID, course section, or instructor name. Avoid pasting identifiable records into shared messages. The U.S. Department of Education’s FERPA resources explain rights concerning access and disclosure; they do not determine a particular grade.

If your calculation differs from the official gradebook, send the instructor a concise reconciliation: the published weights, current numerator and denominator, target, and formula. Ask which input or policy differs. A transparent question is more useful than claiming the gradebook is wrong based on an unverified calculator.

A course-grade calculation is a weighted finish-line problem, not a general production optimization. Keeping each method tied to its domain prevents familiar arithmetic from being applied to the wrong structure.

Can I enter a negative current grade or target?

The interface accepts mathematical targets but typical grade systems do not use negative percentages. Follow the syllabus and enter meaningful values.

Does the calculator round my final course grade?

What if the final replaces my lowest exam?

This two-block formula is insufficient because the current contribution also changes. Recompute the replaced category under the syllabus rule.
