Install at least 22 bags over the measured ordering area and verify the product chart’s settled thickness and depth markers. If the exact bag label lists a different coverage for R-30, replace 43 sq ft before ordering.
Bag count comes from the product chart, not insulation type alone
Loose-fill fiberglass, cellulose, and mineral-fiber products differ in bag weight, density, coverage, installed thickness, settled thickness, and R-value. Even two products of the same material can require different bags. A generic “cellulose covers X square feet” shortcut is not reliable.
The package chart commonly lists a target R-value, minimum installed or settled thickness, maximum square feet per bag, and minimum bags per 1,000 square feet. Use the row for the exact intended addition and installation method. If the chart is framed for total R rather than added R over existing insulation, follow manufacturer instructions or obtain technical guidance.
DOE weatherization guidance requires the correct depth and number of bags according to manufacturer specifications. Meeting depth with too few bags can mean the material was installed at insufficient density; using enough bags but leaving voids also fails.
The whole-bag calculation
The default attic is 40 × 25 feet, or 1,000 square feet. After 100 square feet of verified exclusions, 900 square feet receives insulation. A 5% measurement reserve raises ordering area to 945 square feet.
At the entered label coverage of 43 square feet per bag for an R-30 addition, 945 ÷ 43 equals 21.98. The order rounds up to 22 bags. That corresponds to 946 square feet of chart coverage, only one square foot above the reserve-adjusted area.
Before reserve, 900 ÷ 43 is 20.93 and also rounds to 21. The extra bag is not permission to leave a thick mound near the hatch; distribute the required material uniformly and confirm density/depth documentation.
Existing R-value is not just depth multiplied by one universal number
ENERGY STAR notes that common attic insulation may be roughly R-3 to R-3.5 per inch for a quick visual estimate, but material, density, settling, compression, moisture, gaps, and thermal bridging affect actual performance. Six inches of unknown, uneven insulation is not automatically R-19 everywhere.
Identify material and inspect several depths. Compressed batts lose intended performance. Loose fill can drift near eaves and settle. Joists and framing create thermal bridges. Infrared or professional energy assessment can reveal missing areas and air leakage.
The calculator uses a user-entered existing effective R-value and shows target minus current. If current is R-19 and target R-49, the planned addition is R-30. Verify the code or program target for climate zone, attic assembly, available space, and project type.
Air seal and repair before burying the evidence

Do not disturb suspect vermiculite or other material that may contain asbestos. Stop work and obtain qualified testing or abatement guidance. Older wiring, animal contamination, mold, structural damage, or unsafe access also require professional assessment.
Measure the treatment area without hiding difficult zones
Break irregular attics into rectangles and triangles, calculate each area, and add them. Exclude only surfaces that truly will not receive the selected product. Joists, narrow eaves, and awkward corners still belong when the assembly needs continuous insulation.
Platforms and storage decks complicate air sealing and R-value. Insulation compressed below decking may not reach target performance, and a raised platform needs safe structural design. HVAC equipment requires service pathways and clearances; do not surround appliances beyond manufacturer and code limits.
A reserve covers tape and geometry uncertainty, not poor measuring. Five percent is an editable planning allowance. Complex trusses, inaccessible bays, or a first-time crew may justify a professionally determined allowance, while the label minimum still governs installed quantity.
Installation quality is visible in bag count, depth, and uniformity
Install depth markers at regular intervals according to program or code requirements and make them readable from the access. Mark the required settled depth, not a convenient fluffy height. Some products distinguish initial installed thickness from settled thickness.
Count empty bags and document product name, lot, coverage row, number installed, date, area, target R-value, installed thickness, and settled thickness. DOE job aids call for documentation and bag-count confirmation. The contractor should provide the attic insulation certificate required by applicable rules.
Do not exceed the chart’s maximum coverage per bag. Blowing one bag over a larger area reduces installed mass and R-value. Distribute evenly to edges without blocking baffles, vents, heat sources, equipment, or access.
The pallet weight is a handling number, not a structural approval
Twenty-two 25-pound bags weigh 550 pounds before installation. Loose-fill weight is spread across the attic, but ceiling and structure still need assessment, especially with heavy existing materials, storage, plaster, damage, or unusual products.
Plan safe lifting, dust control, respirators selected for the product and task, eye protection, clothing, lighting, stable access, communication, and heat exposure. Attics can become dangerously hot. Follow the Safety Data Sheet and manufacturer instructions.
Confirm that the retailer supplies the exact product whose coverage row was entered. Similar packaging, a changed bag weight, or another manufacturing version can invalidate the count. Photograph the label and lot information before installation. Store bags dry, protected from damage, and within manufacturer temperature and handling instructions; wet or torn material should not be installed merely to avoid a return.
Coordinate blower availability, hose reach, electrical requirements, crew communication, and cleanup before opening bags. Rental-machine settings and feed rate can be product-specific. If actual consumption differs materially from the plan, stop and check area, chart row, machine setup, density, depth, and distribution instead of forcing the remaining bags into or out of the attic.

Should I round bags up or down?
Up. The coverage chart states a maximum area per bag or minimum bag count; rounding down can underinstall material.
Does meeting depth prove the right R-value?

Can I insulate over existing material?
Often, but first resolve moisture, contamination, air sealing, wiring, clearances, ventilation, compression, and product compatibility.
