What is Occupant Load?

Occupant load is the maximum number of people permitted to occupy a building or space at any given time. This number is crucial for safety purposes, particularly in emergency situations, and is determined based on the International Building Code (IBC) standards. The calculation takes into account factors such as the space’s function, floor area, and fixed seating arrangements.

How to Calculate Building Occupant Load

Step 1

Select the appropriate space function from the dropdown menu. Each function has a specific occupant load factor based on IBC standards.

Step 2

Enter the total floor area in square feet. For net calculations, exclude unoccupied accessory areas like corridors and mechanical rooms. For gross calculations, include all floor space within the exterior walls.

Step 3

Specify if the space has fixed seating. If selecting bench or booth seating, measure and enter the total length of seating in inches.

Step 4

Click the calculate button to determine the total occupant load. The result will show both the final number and the calculation method used.

Step 5

Review the explanation provided below the result to understand how the occupant load was determined. This includes any specific calculations for fixed seating and area-based occupancy.
