Wainscoting Calculator
What is Wainscoting?
Wainscoting is a decorative wall treatment that typically covers the lower portion of a room’s walls. It consists of panels, rails, and stiles, often made of wood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Wainscoting serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, adding architectural interest to a space while also protecting walls from scuffs and damage. The height of wainscoting can vary, but it commonly extends about one-third of the way up the wall or to chair-rail height.
How to Use the Wainscoting Calculator
Step 1: Measure Your Wall
Using a tape measure, determine the length and height of the wall where you plan to install wainscoting. Measure in inches for the most accurate results.
Step 2: Decide on Wainscot Height
Choose how high you want your wainscoting to be. This is typically between 32 and 42 inches, but can vary based on your room’s proportions and personal preference.
Step 3: Determine Desired Panel Width
Consider the look you want to achieve and decide on an approximate width for your panels. This will be adjusted in the calculations to ensure even spacing.
Step 4: Measure Stile Width
Decide on the width of your stiles (the vertical pieces between panels). Common widths range from 2 to 4 inches.
Step 5: Enter Measurements
Input all your measurements into the corresponding fields in the calculator. Make sure to use inches for all measurements.
Step 6: Calculate and Review Results
Click the “Calculate” button to generate your wainscoting layout plan. The results will show you the number of panels, actual panel dimensions, rail heights, and material estimates.
