What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is a fundamental concept in Vedic astrology that helps predict the influence of planets on an individual’s life over time. The term “Vimshottari” means “120” in Sanskrit, referring to the 120-year cycle of this system. It is considered one of the most accurate and widely used Dasha systems in Vedic astrology.

In this system, each planet is assigned a specific period, known as Mahadasha, during which it exerts its primary influence on a person’s life. The order and duration of these planetary periods are as follows:

  • Ketu (South Lunar Node): 7 years
  • Venus: 20 years
  • Sun: 6 years
  • Moon: 10 years
  • Mars: 7 years
  • Rahu (North Lunar Node): 18 years
  • Jupiter: 16 years
  • Saturn: 19 years
  • Mercury: 17 years

The total of these periods adds up to 120 years, which is considered the maximum human lifespan in Vedic astrology.
