UK Flight Delay Compensation Calculator

Check if you’re eligible for compensation for your delayed or cancelled flight under UK law.

In the UK, passengers have significant rights when it comes to flight delays and cancellations. Under UK law (which retained EU Regulation 261/2004 after Brexit), you may be entitled to compensation if your flight is delayed by more than three hours or cancelled, provided the disruption was within the airline’s control. The amount of compensation varies based on the flight distance and length of delay, ranging from £220 to £520 for international flights. For domestic UK flights, a new compensation scheme proposes payments based on a percentage of your ticket price for delays as short as one hour.

It’s important to note that airlines are not required to pay compensation if the delay was caused by “extraordinary circumstances” beyond their control, such as severe weather, security risks, political instability, or strikes unrelated to the airline. Technical issues with the aircraft are generally not considered extraordinary circumstances following court rulings.

How to Use the UK Flight Delay Compensation Calculator

  1. Step 1: Select your flight type from the dropdown menu – choose between “UK Domestic Flight” or “International Flight.” This determines which compensation scheme applies to your situation.
  2. Step 2: For international flights, select the distance of your journey. For domestic flights, this field will be automatically hidden as it’s not relevant to your compensation calculation.
  3. Step 3: Enter the duration of your delay and, for domestic flights, the price you paid for your ticket. The calculator needs this information to determine the appropriate compensation amount.
  4. Step 4: Indicate whether the delay was the airline’s fault or due to extraordinary circumstances. If you’re unsure, select “I don’t know” – but be aware that compensation is only available when the airline is at fault.
  5. Step 5: Click the “Calculate Compensation” button to view your estimated compensation amount along with an explanation of how it was calculated and your eligibility under UK law.
