Schengen Area and the 90/180-Day Rule
The Schengen Area comprises 27 European countries that have abolished border controls at their mutual borders, creating a single visa policy zone. For non-EU nationals, the 90/180-day rule restricts stays to a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period.
This rule applies to tourists, business travelers, and other short-term visitors who don’t require a visa (visa-exempt) or who hold a multiple-entry Schengen visa. Exceeding this limit can result in serious consequences including fines, deportation, or future entry bans to the Schengen Area.
The 90/180-day rule operates on a rolling basis, meaning that at any point in time, you need to look back at the last 180 days and ensure you haven’t spent more than 90 days in the Schengen Area during that period.
How to Use the Schengen Area Calculator
Step 1
Enter the current date or your planned entry date in the “Date of Control/Entry” field. This date serves as the reference point for calculating your 180-day period.
Step 2
Input your previous and planned stays in the Schengen Area by entering the entry and exit dates for each visit. The calculator will automatically display the duration of each stay. For multiple trips, click the “Add Another Stay” button.
Step 3
Click the “Calculate” button to process your travel history. The calculator will analyze your stays within the last 180 days from your control date and determine your compliance with the 90/180-day rule.
Step 4
Review your results, which include the total days stayed in the Schengen Area, your remaining days, and the last date you can legally stay. The calculator also provides a detailed explanation of how these values were determined.
Step 5
Pay attention to any warnings displayed if you’re approaching or have exceeded your allowed stay. Use the “Reset” button if you need to start over with new travel dates or to plan alternative travel scenarios.
