PPM Calculator
Convert between different concentration units: PPM, PPB, PPT, percentage, and per mille.
Examples
Example 1: A solution contains 5 grams of salt in 1000 grams of water. What is the concentration in PPM?
Decimal: 0.005 (5/1000)
PPM: 5,000 (0.005 × 1,000,000)
Example 2: If CO₂ concentration in the atmosphere is 414 PPM, what is this as a percentage?
Percentage: 0.0414% (414/1,000,000 × 100)
About Concentration Units
- Percentage (%): Parts per hundred (1 part in 100)
- Per Mille (‰): Parts per thousand (1 part in 1,000)
- PPM: Parts per million (1 part in 1,000,000)
- PPB: Parts per billion (1 part in 1,000,000,000)
- PPT: Parts per trillion (1 part in 1,000,000,000,000)
What is PPM (Parts Per Million)
PPM (Parts Per Million) is a unit of measurement used to quantify very small values of dimensionless quantities, particularly in measuring the concentration of a substance within a mixture. One PPM represents one part of a substance per 999,999 parts of the mixture, making a total of one million parts. This unit is commonly used in scientific fields, environmental monitoring, and quality control where precise measurements of small concentrations are necessary.
PPM is part of a family of concentration measurements that includes percentage (parts per hundred), per mille (parts per thousand), PPB (parts per billion), and PPT (parts per trillion). These units allow scientists and engineers to express very dilute concentrations in convenient numbers rather than using small decimal values. For example, instead of saying a solution contains 0.0005 of a substance, we can say it contains 500 PPM, which is more practical for communication and calculation purposes.
How to Use the PPM Calculator
Step 1: Enter the value you want to convert in the “Enter Value” field. Make sure to input only numerical values without any units.
Step 2: Select the appropriate input unit from the dropdown menu. Choose from decimal, percentage (%), per mille (‰), parts per million (PPM), parts per billion (PPB), or parts per trillion (PPT) depending on your starting measurement.
Step 3: Select the desired output unit from the second dropdown menu. This is the unit you want to convert your value to.
Step 4: Click the “Calculate” button to perform the conversion. The result will appear in the green result box below the calculator.
Step 5: Review the detailed explanation provided with your result, which shows the step-by-step conversion process and formulas used to calculate the final value.
