What is PPM (Parts Per Million)

PPM (Parts Per Million) is a unit of measurement used to quantify very small values of dimensionless quantities, particularly in measuring the concentration of a substance within a mixture. One PPM represents one part of a substance per 999,999 parts of the mixture, making a total of one million parts. This unit is commonly used in scientific fields, environmental monitoring, and quality control where precise measurements of small concentrations are necessary.

PPM is part of a family of concentration measurements that includes percentage (parts per hundred), per mille (parts per thousand), PPB (parts per billion), and PPT (parts per trillion). These units allow scientists and engineers to express very dilute concentrations in convenient numbers rather than using small decimal values. For example, instead of saying a solution contains 0.0005 of a substance, we can say it contains 500 PPM, which is more practical for communication and calculation purposes.
