How to Use the Pool Bleach Calculator
Step 1: Enter the pool volume
Input the total volume of your pool in gallons. If you’re unsure about your pool’s volume, you can usually find this information in your pool’s documentation or by using a separate pool volume calculator based on your pool’s dimensions.
Step 2: Input the current free chlorine level
Use a reliable pool water testing kit to measure the current free chlorine level in your pool. Enter this value in parts per million (ppm) into the calculator.
Step 3: Specify the desired free chlorine level
Determine the target free chlorine level you want to achieve. Typically, the recommended range is between 1 and 3 ppm for residential pools. Enter your desired level in ppm.
Step 4: Select the bleach strength
Enter the strength of the bleach you’re using, typically expressed as a percentage. Most household bleach is around 6% sodium hypochlorite, but pool-grade liquid chlorine can be stronger. Check the label on your bleach container for the correct percentage.
Step 5: Calculate and review the results
Click the “Calculate” button to determine the amount of bleach needed. The calculator will display the required amount in fluid ounces, along with an explanation of how the result was derived.
Step 6: Apply the bleach to your pool
Following the calculator’s recommendation, add the specified amount of bleach to your pool. It’s best to add the bleach near the return jets while the pool pump is running to ensure proper distribution.
