What is Pokémon Type Effectiveness?

Pokémon type effectiveness is a fundamental battle mechanic that determines how much damage a move will deal based on the typing of both the attacking move and the defending Pokémon. Each of the 18 standard types (plus the newer Stellar type) has specific relationships with other types, creating a complex rock-paper-scissors system that forms the strategic core of Pokémon battles.

Type effectiveness works on a multiplier system:

  • Super effective moves (2×): When a move is super effective against a defending type, it deals double damage
  • Not very effective moves (0.5×): When a move is not very effective, it deals half damage
  • Immune (0×): Some types are completely immune to certain move types, taking no damage
  • Dual-typing: When a Pokémon has two types, the effectiveness multipliers are combined (potentially creating 4× or 0.25× scenarios)

How to Use the Pokémon Type Calculator

Step 1: Choose your calculation mode by selecting either “Defense” or “Offense” at the top of the calculator. Defense mode helps you understand a Pokémon’s weaknesses and resistances, while Offense mode shows how well your move types cover different Pokémon.

Step 2: For Defense mode, select your Pokémon’s primary type from the dropdown menu. If your Pokémon has dual typing, also select a secondary type. You can optionally select an ability that affects type matchups and a Tera Type if applicable.

Step 3: For Offense mode, check the boxes for all move types you want to include in your coverage analysis. This helps you understand how well your selected moves can handle different Pokémon type combinations.

Step 4: Click the “Calculate” button to see your results. The calculator will display a comprehensive breakdown of effectiveness multipliers, showing which types deal more or less damage to your Pokémon (Defense mode) or which type combinations your moves are effective against (Offense mode).
