HFSS Score Calculator
What is the HFSS Calculator?
The HFSS (High in Fat, Sugar, and Salt) Calculator is a tool designed to help food manufacturers, nutritionists, and consumers assess the nutritional profile of food products. It uses the UK’s Nutrient Profiling Model to calculate a score that determines whether a product is considered “less healthy” or “healthier” according to its content of energy, saturated fat, total sugar, sodium, fruit/vegetables/nuts, fiber, and protein. This score is crucial for understanding how a product aligns with UK nutrition regulations and can guide product reformulation efforts.
How to Use the HFSS Calculator
Step 1: Gather Nutritional Information
Before using the calculator, collect accurate nutritional information for your product per 100g or 100ml. You’ll need:
- Energy content (in kcal)
- Saturated fat content (in grams)
- Total sugar content (in grams)
- Sodium content (in milligrams)
- Fruit, vegetable, and nut content (as a percentage)
- Fiber content (in grams)
- Protein content (in grams)
Step 2: Enter the Data
Input the collected nutritional information into the corresponding fields in the calculator. Ensure you’re using the correct units as specified in each field label.
Step 3: Calculate the HFSS Score
Click the “Calculate HFSS Score” button. The calculator will process the information and generate an HFSS score based on the UK’s Nutrient Profiling Model.
Step 4: Interpret the Results
The calculator will display your HFSS score along with an explanation of whether your product is classified as HFSS or not. A score of 4 or more indicates that the product is considered “less healthy” or HFSS.
Step 5: Review the Detailed Breakdown
Examine the detailed breakdown provided below the score. This explains how points were allocated for each nutritional component, helping you understand which aspects of your product contribute most to its HFSS status.
Step 6: Consider Reformulation
If your product is classified as HFSS, use the breakdown to identify areas for potential reformulation. Focus on reducing points from energy, saturated fat, sugar, and sodium, while increasing points from fruit/vegetable/nut content, fiber, and protein.
By following these steps, you can effectively use the HFSS Calculator to assess and potentially improve the nutritional profile of your food products, ensuring they align with current health guidelines and regulations.
