How GPA is Calculated?

GPA is calculated using the following steps:

1. Convert Grades to Points: Each grade is associated with a specific point value. For example, an "A+" corresponds to 4.0 points, an "A" to 4.0 points, a "B+" to 3.3 points, and so on.

2. Multiply Grade Points by Course Credits: For each course, multiply the grade points by the number of credits. This gives the total points for that course.

3. Sum Total Points and Total Credits: Add up all the points from each course to get the total points. Similarly, add up all the credits from each course to get the total credits.

4. Divide Total Points by Total Credits:The GPA is calculated by dividing the total points by the total credits.

Formula: GPA = Total Points / Total Credits

Example Calculation

Consider the following courses:

  • Course 1: Grade A+ (4.0 points), 4 credits
  • Course 2: Grade A (4.0 points), 3 credits
  • Course 3: Grade B+ (3.3 points), 3 credits
  • Course 4: Grade B (3.0 points), 4 credits
  • Course 5: Grade C (2.0 points), 2 credits

1. Convert Grades to Points and Multiply by Credits:

  • Course 1: 4.0 * 4 = 16.0 points
  • Course 2: 4.0 * 3 = 12.0 points
  • Course 3: 3.3 * 3 = 9.9 points
  • Course 4: 3.0 * 4 = 12.0 points
  • Course 5: 2.0 * 2 = 4.0 points

2. Sum Total Points and Credits

  • Total Points = 16.0 + 12.0 + 9.9 + 12.0 + 4.0 = 53.9 points
  • Total Credits = 4 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 16 credits

3. Calculate GPA: GPA = Total Points / Total Credits = 53.9 / 16 = 3.37
