What is TAVT?

Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) is a one-time tax charged on vehicles titled in Georgia that replaced the annual “birthday tax” and sales tax. This tax applies to both new and used vehicles purchased on or after March 1, 2013. The TAVT is calculated based on the Fair Market Value (FMV) of the vehicle, minus any trade-in value, multiplied by the current tax rate.

How to Calculate Georgia TAVT

Step 1: Determine your vehicle’s Fair Market Value (FMV). For new vehicles, use the retail price. For used vehicles, use the higher value between the bill of sale or NADA clean retail value.

Step 2: Enter any trade-in value if applicable. This amount will be deducted from the FMV before calculating the tax.

Step 3: Select your vehicle type (new or used) from the dropdown menu.

Step 4: Click the calculate button to determine your TAVT amount. The calculator will display both the final tax amount and a detailed breakdown of the calculation.

Step 5: Review the calculation breakdown, which shows how the tax was determined using the formula: (FMV – Trade-in) × Current TAVT Rate.

Step 6: Save or print your calculation results for reference when visiting your local tag office. Remember that the actual amount may vary slightly based on current rates and specific circumstances.
