About Flag Size Calculations
The standard ratio for calculating flag size from pole height:
- Flag Width (Fly) = Pole Height ÷ 4
- Flag Height (Hoist) = Pole Height ÷ (4 × Flag Ratio)
Different flag types have different standard width-to-height ratios:
- US Flag: 1:1.9 (height:width)
- UK Flag: 1:2 (height:width)
- EU Flag: 2:3 (height:width)
- Canadian Flag: 1:2 (height:width)
- Australian Flag: 1:2 (height:width)
How to Use the Flag Size Calculator
Step 1: Select your calculation type from the dropdown menu. You can choose to calculate flag dimensions based on pole height, determine the appropriate pole height for an existing flag, or work with custom flag ratios.
Step 2: If calculating from pole height, enter the height of your flagpole in either feet or meters using the input field and unit selector.
Step 3: Select your flag type from the dropdown menu. Options include US Flag (1:1.9 ratio), UK Flag (1:2 ratio), EU Flag (2:3 ratio), Canadian Flag (1:2 ratio), Australian Flag (1:2 ratio), or Custom Ratio.
Step 4: If you selected “Custom Ratio,” enter your desired width ratio and height ratio in the corresponding fields. For example, if your flag has a 3:2 aspect ratio, enter 3 for width and 2 for height.
Step 5: For custom calculations, you can also adjust the pole height ratio, which determines the relationship between flag width and pole height. The standard is 4, meaning the flag width is 1/4 of the pole height.
Step 6: Click the “Calculate” button to generate your results. The calculator will display the recommended flag dimensions based on your inputs.
Step 7: Review the results section, which shows the calculated flag width (fly), height (hoist), and total flag area. The calculator also provides a visual representation of the flag and pole proportions.
