What is DPMO?
DPMO (Defects Per Million Opportunities) is a key metric used in quality management and Six Sigma methodology to measure process performance. It represents the number of defects that would occur in a process if there were one million opportunities for a defect to occur. This measurement helps organizations understand their process quality and identify areas for improvement.
How to Calculate Process Quality Using DPMO Calculator
Step 1: Enter the total number of defects found during your quality inspection process.
Step 2: Input the total number of units that were inspected during the quality check.
Step 3: Specify the number of defect opportunities per unit. This represents how many ways a single unit could potentially have a defect.
Step 4: Click the calculate button to generate your results. The calculator will display:
- DPMO value
- Sigma level of your process
- Process yield percentage
- Defects per unit (DPU)
Step 5: Interpret your results. A lower DPMO indicates better process quality. For reference:
- 6 Sigma = 3.4 DPMO (World-class)
- 5 Sigma = 233 DPMO (Excellent)
- 4 Sigma = 6,210 DPMO (Industry average)
- 3 Sigma = 66,807 DPMO (Below average)
