Copper Power Calculator
What is Copper Power?
Copper Power is a medication used in aquariums to treat various parasitic infections in fish, particularly those caused by external parasites like ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis) and marine velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum). It contains chelated copper, which is a form of copper that remains stable in water and is less toxic to fish than other copper compounds. Maintaining the correct copper concentration in an aquarium is crucial for effective treatment without harming the fish or other aquatic life.
How to Use the Copper Power Calculator
Step 1: Enter the Aquarium Size
Input the volume of your aquarium in gallons. This is crucial for calculating the correct dosage, as larger tanks require more Copper Power to achieve the desired concentration.
Step 2: Input the Current Copper Level
Measure the current copper concentration in your aquarium using a reliable test kit. Enter this value in parts per million (PPM) in the “Current Copper Level” field.
Step 3: Specify the Target Copper Level
Determine the desired copper concentration for your treatment. This typically ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 PPM, depending on the specific parasite and the sensitivity of your fish species. Enter this target value in the “Target Copper Level” field.
Step 4: Include Water Change Percentage (Optional)
If you’re planning a water change before dosing, enter the percentage of water you’ll be changing. This helps the calculator adjust for the dilution effect on the current copper level.
Step 5: Click “Calculate”
Press the “Calculate” button to determine the amount of Copper Power needed. The result will be displayed in milliliters (mL).
Step 6: Review the Results and Explanation
The calculator will show the required dosage of Copper Power. Read the accompanying explanation to understand how the calculation was performed and what the result means.
Step 7: Dose Your Aquarium
Carefully measure and add the calculated amount of Copper Power to your aquarium. It’s often recommended to add the medication slowly over a period of time to avoid shocking the fish.
Step 8: Monitor and Retest
After dosing, regularly monitor your fish for any signs of stress. Retest the copper levels after 24 hours and adjust as necessary to maintain the target concentration throughout the treatment period.
Remember, while this calculator provides a good starting point, factors like the presence of invertebrates, activated carbon, or certain medications can affect copper levels. Always consult with a veterinarian or experienced aquarist for specific treatment advice, especially for sensitive species or complex aquarium setups.
