How to Use the Contact Lens Vertex Calculator

Step 1: Enter the Spectacle Lens Power

Begin by inputting the spectacle lens power in diopters (D) into the “Spectacle Lens Power” field. This value can be found on your glasses prescription and is typically expressed as a number followed by “D” (e.g., -5.00 D).

Step 2: Verify the Vertex Distance

The calculator is pre-set with a default vertex distance of 12 mm, which is a standard distance for most eyeglasses. If your optometrist has specified a different vertex distance, you can adjust this value in the “Vertex Distance” field.

Step 3: Click the Calculate Button

After entering the required information, click the “Calculate” button. The tool will process your input and apply the vertex compensation formula.

Step 4: Review the Results

The calculator will display the equivalent contact lens power. This result is rounded to the nearest 0.25 D to match standard contact lens prescriptions. You’ll also see an explanation of how the calculation was performed.

Step 5: Interpret the Results

The calculated contact lens power represents the equivalent correction needed for a contact lens to provide the same visual acuity as your spectacles. This value is particularly important for prescriptions stronger than ±4.00 D, where the vertex distance has a more significant impact on the effective lens power.

Step 6: Consult with Your Eye Care Professional

While this calculator provides a good estimate, it’s crucial to consult with your optometrist or ophthalmologist before making any changes to your prescription. They can perform additional tests and consider other factors to ensure the most appropriate contact lens prescription for your eyes.
