What is Asphalt?
Asphalt, also known as bitumen or blacktop, is a sticky, black, and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. It serves as a primary material in road construction and paving projects. This material is renowned for its durability, water resistance, and versatility in various construction applications. Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), the most common type, combines asphalt with aggregates like sand, gravel, and crushed stone at high temperatures to create a durable paving material.
How to Calculate Asphalt Quantities
Step 1: Measure Your Project Area
Measure the length and width of the area requiring asphalt paving. For irregular shapes, break down the area into regular geometric sections and measure each separately.
Step 2: Determine Required Depth
Decide on the required asphalt depth based on your project type: typically 2-3 inches for driveways, 4-6 inches for parking lots, and 6-8 inches for roads.
Step 3: Select Asphalt Type
Choose the appropriate asphalt mix for your project from the available options: Hot Mix, Warm Mix, Driveway Mix, or Porous Asphalt.
Step 4: Enter Measurements
Input your measurements in either imperial or metric units. Select your preferred measurement system from the dropdown menu.
Step 5: Review Results
Examine the calculated volume, weight, and recommended quantity (including 6% extra for waste). Consider the estimated cost based on current asphalt prices in your area.
