What is Polymeric Sand?

Polymeric sand is a specialized material used to fill the joints between pavers in outdoor installations such as patios, walkways, and driveways. It consists of fine sand particles mixed with polymers that harden when exposed to water. This unique composition provides several benefits over traditional jointing sand:

  • Enhanced durability and longevity
  • Resistance to washout from rain or water exposure
  • Prevention of weed growth and ant infestations
  • Improved stability of the paver installation
  • Protection of paver edges from damage

Polymeric sand is applied after the pavers are installed, serving as a finishing touch that not only enhances the appearance but also significantly improves the overall performance and maintenance of the paved area.

How to Use the Polymeric Sand Calculator

Step 1: Enter the project area

Begin by inputting the total area of your paver installation in square feet. This measurement should include the entire surface where you plan to apply the polymeric sand.

Step 2: Input paver dimensions

Provide the length, width, and height of your pavers in inches. If you’re using multiple paver sizes, calculate and enter the average dimensions.

Step 3: Specify the joint width

Enter the width of the joints between your pavers in inches. This measurement is crucial as it significantly affects the amount of sand required.

Step 4: Select the sand type

Choose between polymeric sand and nitro sand, depending on your project requirements and preferences.

Step 5: Click “Calculate”

After entering all the required information, click the “Calculate” button to generate your results.

Step 6: Review the results

The calculator will display the estimated amount of sand needed in pounds, the number of 50 lb bags required, and the estimated coverage per bag. If you selected nitro sand, it will also show the number of 40 lb pails needed.
