What is the Spain Tourist Tax?
The Spain Tourist Tax, also known as the “Sustainable Tourism Tax” or “Eco-tax,” is a fee imposed on tourists staying in accommodation facilities in certain regions of Spain. This tax was introduced to help mitigate the environmental impact of tourism and fund sustainable tourism initiatives. Currently, the tax is primarily implemented in the Balearic Islands (including Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera) and Catalonia (including Barcelona).
The amount of tax varies depending on several factors, including the type of accommodation, the length of stay, the season, and the specific region. Generally, luxury accommodations have higher tax rates, and there are often discounts for longer stays or visits during the low season. Children under 16 are typically exempt from this tax.
