Build a delivery ticket for identical rectangular landscape beds from finished length, width, and average soil depth. The calculator converts the geometric fill to cubic yards, adds an explicit settling or placement allowance, rounds upward to the supplier’s sellable increment, estimates short tons from an entered delivered bulk density, counts truck loads, prices material, and translates rounding excess back into depth across the beds.

Order volume is not a soil prescription. “Topsoil,” “garden mix,” compost blend, planting soil, structural soil, and screened fill are not interchangeable. Texture, organic matter, salts, pH, nutrients, contaminants, drainage, water holding, maturity, weed seed, source, and plant requirements must be evaluated. Do not place an unknown bulk material against buildings, utilities, roots, drains, or slopes simply because the cubic yards fit.
How the sample soil order is calculated
Each sample bed is 40 feet long and 12 feet wide, and there are two beds. Their combined plan area is 960 square feet. A 4-inch finished layer equals one-third of a foot, so geometric volume is 960 times one-third, or 320 cubic feet. Dividing by 27 converts that to 11.85 cubic yards.
A 15% user-entered placement and settlement allowance raises the planning volume to 13.63 cubic yards. The supplier sells in half-yard increments, so the calculator rounds upward to 14.0 cubic yards. At the entered 2,200 pounds per delivered cubic yard, the order is estimated at 30,800 pounds, or 15.40 U.S. short tons. A seven-yard usable truck capacity produces two delivery loads. At $65 per cubic yard, material alone is $910.
Rounding creates 0.37 cubic yard above the planned allowance. Spread evenly over 960 square feet, that volume represents about 0.13 inch of depth. This is a scale check, not permission to raise final grade. Use excess where the grading plan allows, keep required drainage and clearances, or agree on supplier/contractor handling before delivery.
Measure finished geometry, not the loose pile
The length, width, and depth fields describe the intended installed profile. Measure at finished grade after accounting for mulch, sod, edging, pavement, root flare, drainage, and settlement. A four-inch soil layer beneath three inches of mulch is not a seven-inch soil order. If existing soil will be tilled and amended rather than removed, define whether the desired depth is imported material thickness or final mixed-zone depth.
For irregular beds, divide the plan into rectangles, triangles, circles, and measured offsets, calculate each area, and sum them. Use average width only when it represents the shape. A curving 40-foot bed that varies from 3 to 18 feet needs stations or a plan takeoff; one convenient width can overstate or understate the order. Calculate zones with different depths separately.
Settlement allowance must match the material and placement
The default 15% is a visible sample, not a national standard. Dry fluffy compost, moist screened loam, blended planting soil, and dense mineral fill can settle and handle differently. Stockpile aeration, rain, haul vibration, loading, wheel traffic, tillage, overworking, and final compaction change volume. A supplier may quote a loose struck bucket while the plan specifies compacted or settled depth.
Ask whether the supplier’s cubic yard is measured loose, how the material is blended, what moisture range is typical, and what allowance they recommend for the intended installation. For engineered planting soil or load-bearing landscape assemblies, follow the project specification, laboratory tests, lifts, and density requirements. Do not use ornamental-bed assumptions for structural fill.
Weight is a delivery screen, not a scale ticket
Bulk density varies with mineral content, particle size, organic matter, moisture, compaction, and how the supplier measures volume. The calculator multiplies rounded order yards by the entered pounds per cubic yard and divides by 2,000 for U.S. short tons. It does not infer density from a generic soil label.
Truck volume does not ensure legal payload. A seven-yard box might reach its weight limit before it reaches its volume capacity with wet dense soil. Bridges, driveways, curbs, septic systems, underground utilities, gates, overhead lines, tree branches, slopes, turning radius, and ground bearing can further limit delivery. The hauler controls legal loading and safe access.

Choose a soil from tests and intended use
Landscape soil should support the plants and hydrology of the site. A laboratory or qualified local service can evaluate texture, organic matter, pH, soluble salts, nutrients, and potential contaminants using appropriate sampling. Native soil, climate, irrigation water, species, rooting depth, drainage, and maintenance objectives guide amendments. More organic matter or fertilizer is not automatically better.
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service resources explain soil properties and soil health principles, but a mapped soil series does not describe an imported stockpile or every disturbed urban lot. Take representative samples. For food gardens, childcare, former industrial uses, flood deposits, ash, painted structures, or suspicious fill, seek local guidance on contaminants and safe use.
Amending native soil is not simple volume replacement
If compost is incorporated into existing soil, specify amendment depth and ratio from an agronomic recommendation. Adding three inches of compost and tilling to six inches is not the same as installing a three-inch final layer; mixing changes the profile volume and elevation. Excessive amendment can create nutrient, salt, shrinkage, drainage, or interface problems.
Protect existing tree roots. Raising grade, stockpiling, trenching, or driving over root zones can damage trees even when the material is high quality. Arborist review may be necessary. Avoid burying trunks and root flares. Coordinate utility locating before excavation or stakes; call 811 and follow state/local requirements.
Grade for drainage before spreading soil
Final soil should not direct water toward foundations, cover weep holes, reduce siding clearances, obstruct drains, or bury valves and cleanouts. Preserve accessible utility covers and required inspection zones. On slopes, assess erosion, slope stability, retaining conditions, and runoff. Local stormwater and sediment-control rules may apply.
Do not compact ornamental planting soil like road base, but do place it in a manner that avoids large voids and future collapse. Prevent working saturated soil, which can destroy structure. Stage material on an approved protected area, control sediment, cover piles as required, and keep runoff out of streets and waterways.
Use a zone-by-zone delivery plan
Before delivery
Stake bed limits and elevations, verify utilities and access, approve the material sample/test, confirm increment, density, moisture, truck size, fees, and rejection procedure.
At delivery
Match ticket and product, inspect contamination and moisture, record volume/weight basis, protect pavement and drainage, and direct trucks with a trained spotter.
After placement
Check depth at a grid, preserve grades, avoid overcompaction, document leftovers, and test/adjust irrigation for the installed profile.
If zones are not identical, run the calculator separately and label the results. Keep planting mix separate from lawn topdressing, drainage aggregate, mulch, and structural fill. Multiple smaller deliveries can reduce contamination and staging pressure but may increase fees. A written ticket should state material name, source, test/specification, volume basis, quantity, delivery constraints, and approved destination for excess.
Cost needs more than unit price
The displayed amount is rounded cubic yards times the entered material price. It excludes delivery minimums, fuel surcharges, tax, testing, equipment, labor, access protection, excavation, disposal, erosion controls, grading, amendments, irrigation work, permits, and restoration. Weight-based suppliers may invoice from a scale ticket instead of cubic yards.
Compare proposals on the same material and quantity basis. A low price per yard can be misleading if density, quality, contamination, delivery capacity, or amendment needs differ. For a separate U.S.
Frequently asked questions
How many cubic yards cover 1,000 square feet one inch deep?
Geometrically, 1,000 sq ft x 1/12 ft divided by 27 is about 3.09 cu yd. Add only a material- and method-appropriate allowance, then round to the supplier increment.
Why not use one fixed topsoil weight?
Moisture, mineral texture, organic content, screening, and compaction change bulk density. Enter the supplier’s estimate for the exact delivered product and verify truck payload.
Can I use the calculator for circular or irregular beds?
Calculate their area separately, or divide them into measured shapes, then choose equivalent length and width whose product equals the total area. Run different depths as separate zones.
Is 15% always the right settling allowance?
No. It is a sample. Material condition, delivery basis, installation, final density, and supplier/contractor experience should determine the allowance.
Does rounded excess mean I should spread soil deeper?
No. Preserve the specified grade and plant profile. Plan an approved use, return, storage, or disposal path for excess before delivery.
Can I order structural fill with this tool?
Not reliably. Structural fill requires specified material, geotechnical design, lift thickness, moisture, compaction testing, and engineered quantity control.
