Scoring Formulas
Decathlon scoring uses specific mathematical formulas to convert athletic performances into points:
Points = A × (B – T)^C
Where T = time in seconds
Points = A × (P – B)^C
Where P = distance/height in meters or centimeters
| Event | A Value | B Value | C Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100m | 25.4347 | 18 | 1.81 | seconds |
| Long Jump | 0.14354 | 220 | 1.4 | cm |
| Shot Put | 51.39 | 1.5 | 1.05 | meters |
| High Jump | 0.8465 | 75 | 1.42 | cm |
| 400m | 1.53775 | 82 | 1.81 | seconds |
| 110m Hurdles | 5.74352 | 28.5 | 1.92 | seconds |
| Discus | 12.91 | 4 | 1.1 | meters |
| Pole Vault | 0.2797 | 100 | 1.35 | cm |
| Javelin | 10.14 | 7 | 1.08 | meters |
| 1500m | 0.03768 | 480 | 1.85 | seconds |
About Decathlon Scoring
The decathlon is a combined track and field event consisting of ten different disciplines competed over two consecutive days. Each event is scored using official IAAF (now World Athletics) formulas that convert athletic performances into points.
Key Scoring Principles
- Progressive Scoring: The scoring system is progressive, meaning it becomes increasingly difficult to improve your score as performance gets better
- No Zero Scores: Athletes cannot score zero points in any event (minimum performance thresholds apply)
- Automatic Timing: All times should be electronically measured; hand timing requires adjustments (+0.24s for sprints, +0.14s for 400m)
- Official Standards: All equipment and field event specifications must meet World Athletics standards
- Weather Conditions: Wind assistance is limited to +2.0 m/s for individual events (combined events have different regulations)

Competition Rules
- Two-Day Format: Events are spread across two consecutive days with five events each day
- Minimum Rest: There must be at least 30 minutes between the end of one event and start of the next
- False Starts: One false start in any track event results in disqualification
- Field Event Attempts: Athletes get three attempts in throwing events and jumping events (with progression rules for high jump and pole vault)
- Withdrawal: Athletes who do not start or fail to record a valid mark in any event are eliminated from the competition
Historical Context
The modern decathlon scoring system was established by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and has been refined several times. The current tables, introduced in 1985, were designed to create balanced scoring across all ten events, ensuring that no single event dominates the overall competition.
The scoring formulas use specific coefficients (A, B, C values) for each event that were mathematically derived to create equitable point distributions. The progressive nature of the scoring system (with C values greater than 1) reflects the reality that athletic improvements become increasingly difficult at higher performance levels.
