Cylinder Area Formulas

  • Total Surface Area: A = 2πr(r + h)
  • Lateral Surface Area: A = 2πrh
  • Base Area (one circle): A = πr²
  • Both Bases Area: A = 2πr²

What is Cylinder Surface Area?

The surface area of a cylinder is the total area covered by all surfaces of the cylinder. A right circular cylinder consists of two circular bases and one curved lateral surface.

To visualize this, imagine unfolding a cylinder like opening a cardboard tube. You would get two circles (the top and bottom) and one rectangle (the curved side when flattened).

The radius (r) is the distance from the center of the circular base to its edge, while the height (h) is the distance between the two circular bases.

Types of Cylinder Areas

Total Surface Area

The sum of all surfaces including both circular bases and the curved lateral surface. Formula: 2πr(r + h)

Lateral Surface Area

Only the curved side surface of the cylinder, excluding the top and bottom circles. Formula: 2πrh

Base Area

The area of one circular base. For both bases combined, multiply by 2. Formula: πr²

Calculation Examples

Example 1: Small Cylinder

Given: Radius = 3 cm, Height = 5 cm

Total Surface Area: 2π(3)(3 + 5) = 48π ≈ 150.8 cm²

Lateral Area: 2π(3)(5) = 30π ≈ 94.2 cm²

Example 2: Large Cylinder

Given: Radius = 10 m, Height = 15 m

Total Surface Area: 2π(10)(10 + 15) = 500π ≈ 1571.0 m²

Lateral Area: 2π(10)(15) = 300π ≈ 942.5 m²

Example 3: Pipe Calculation

Given: Radius = 2.5 in, Height = 8 in

Total Surface Area: 2π(2.5)(2.5 + 8) = 52.5π ≈ 164.9 in²

Lateral Area: 2π(2.5)(8) = 40π ≈ 125.7 in²
