Hand vs Crib Scoring Differences
Hand Scoring: Four-card flush counts (4 points), five-card flush counts (5 points)
Crib Scoring: Only five-card flush counts (5 points), four-card flush doesn’t count
Both: Fifteens, pairs, runs, and nobs score identically in hand and crib
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I count multiple combinations of 15s?
Each unique combination that adds to 15 scores separately. For example, with 5-5-5-J-5, you can make 15 in multiple ways: each 5 with the Jack (worth 10), and various combinations of multiple 5s together.
What’s the difference between a run and a straight?
In cribbage, runs are sequences of consecutive ranks but don’t need to be in order. A-2-3 is a run, as is 3-A-2. Suits don’t matter for runs.
Can I score both a pair and a run with the same cards?
Yes! Cards can be used in multiple scoring combinations. For example, 4-5-5-6 scores both a pair of 5s and a double run.
What is the lowest possible score in cribbage?
The lowest possible score is 0 points. This can happen with hands like A-4-7-J with an 8 starter, where no combinations create 15s, pairs, runs, flushes, or nobs.
