Raw Feeding for Dogs

Raw feeding, also known as a Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet or Prey Model Raw (PMR) diet, involves feeding dogs uncooked meats, bones, organs, and sometimes vegetables and fruits. This approach aims to mimic what dogs would naturally eat in the wild, providing nutrients in their most natural form.

The two most common approaches to raw feeding are:

  • Prey Model Raw (80/10/10): 80% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bones, and 10% organ meat (with half being liver)
  • BARF Model (70/10/10/10): 70% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bones, 10% organ meat, and 10% vegetables and fruits

Most adult dogs require approximately 2-3% of their ideal body weight in raw food daily, while puppies need 4-6% to support their growth. Active or working dogs may need up to 5% of their body weight daily.

How to Use Our Raw Feeding Calculator for Dogs

Step 1: Enter Your Dog's Details

Select your dog's age category (puppy, adult, or senior) and enter their weight in kilograms. This information forms the foundation for calculating the appropriate feeding amount.

Step 2: Specify Activity Level and Body Condition

Choose your dog's activity level (low, moderate, or high) and current body condition (underweight, ideal, or overweight). These factors help adjust the feeding amount to maintain or achieve an ideal weight.

Step 3: Select Your Preferred Feeding Model

Choose between the Prey Model Raw (80/10/10) or BARF Model (70/10/10/10) based on your feeding philosophy and your dog's specific needs.

Step 4: Review Your Personalized Feeding Plan

After clicking the calculate button, review the daily feeding amount and breakdown of different food components. The calculator provides the total amount in grams and a detailed breakdown of muscle meat, raw meaty bones, organ meat, and vegetables (if applicable).

Step 5: Monitor and Adjust

Use the calculated amounts as a starting point and monitor your dog's weight and condition over time. Adjust the feeding amount as needed based on your dog's individual response, as each dog's metabolism and needs are unique.
