Cord of Wood Volume & Cost Calculator

What is a Cord of Wood?

A cord of wood is a standard unit of measurement used for firewood in North America. A full cord represents a stack of wood measuring 4 feet high, 4 feet deep, and 8 feet long, totaling 128 cubic feet of space. A face cord, also known as a rick, is one-third of a full cord, typically consisting of wood pieces 16 inches in length while maintaining the same height and length as a full cord.

How to Calculate Cord of Wood Volume

  1. Enter the length of your wood stack in feet in the “Length” field. This measurement should be taken along the longest side of the stack.
  2. Input the width (depth) of your stack in feet. For a face cord, this is typically 16 inches (1.33 feet).
  3. Measure and enter the height of your wood stack in feet.
  4. If you want to calculate the cost, enter the current market price per cord in your area in the “Price per Cord” field.
  5. Click the calculate button to see your results. The calculator will display: – The number of full cords – The equivalent number of face cords – Total volume in cubic feet – Estimated total cost (if price was entered)
  6. Review the calculation formulas provided below each result to understand how the values were determined.
  7. For accurate measurements, ensure your wood is stacked neatly with minimal gaps between pieces.
  8. Remember that actual wood volume may vary due to factors such as: – Air spaces between logs – Wood piece sizes and shapes – Stacking method – Wood type and condition
