What is a Cord of Wood?
A cord of wood is a standard unit of measurement used for firewood in North America. A full cord represents a stack of wood measuring 4 feet high, 4 feet deep, and 8 feet long, totaling 128 cubic feet of space. A face cord, also known as a rick, is one-third of a full cord, typically consisting of wood pieces 16 inches in length while maintaining the same height and length as a full cord.
How to Calculate Cord of Wood Volume
- Enter the length of your wood stack in feet in the “Length” field. This measurement should be taken along the longest side of the stack.
- Input the width (depth) of your stack in feet. For a face cord, this is typically 16 inches (1.33 feet).
- Measure and enter the height of your wood stack in feet.
- If you want to calculate the cost, enter the current market price per cord in your area in the “Price per Cord” field.
- Click the calculate button to see your results. The calculator will display: – The number of full cords – The equivalent number of face cords – Total volume in cubic feet – Estimated total cost (if price was entered)
- Review the calculation formulas provided below each result to understand how the values were determined.
- For accurate measurements, ensure your wood is stacked neatly with minimal gaps between pieces.
- Remember that actual wood volume may vary due to factors such as: – Air spaces between logs – Wood piece sizes and shapes – Stacking method – Wood type and condition
